Rotterdam Maritime Capital of Europe

On January 13 classification society DNV and Menon Economics launched the 2022 edition of the Leading Maritime Cities report. Rotterdam has emerged as the runner-up, only preceded by Singapore.

This makes Rotterdam and the surrounding business region the leading maritime city of Europe, leaving Oslo, Hamburg and London behind.

The report provides fresh insights into which global hubs offer the best infrastructure, technology, finance, and world-class talent, to help the maritime community connect and prosper. Each maritime city was benchmarked on five key pillars: Shipping, Maritime Finance & Law, Maritime Technology, Ports & Logistics and Attractiveness & Competitiveness.

Rotterdam scores well overall and particularly in Ports & Logistics and Attractiveness & Competitiveness. This result supports the claim that Rotterdam is the maritime capital of Europe.

“This recognition encourages us to continue to join forces in the city, port and region to further strengthen our international competitive position.”
Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb of the City of Rotterdam

Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb of the City of Rotterdam: “I am honoured by this recognition from the international maritime community of Rotterdam as the undisputed maritime capital of Europe. This recognition encourages us to continue to join forces in the city, port and region to further strengthen our international competitive position.”
